Tree Care Tips
Pruning Guidelines:
We prune for strength and form.
Topping a large tree causes excessive sprouting of weakly attached new
branches, and also increases wind resistance by creating denser
branching patterns. Excessive lifting creates a condition where trees
become top-heavy. Both of these methods of pruning increase the
chances of wind damage in the long run.
We prune
for strength by removing:

- Co-dominant leaders and multi-trunks to
encourage the growth of one main single "central" leader.
- Injured, diseased and dead branches.
- Rubbing branches.
We prune for form by removing:
- Excess lateral branches to produce a ladder
effect at maturity.
- Water sprouts and root suckers.
- Limbs that turn inward, cross or extend.
Mulching:
Palm Trees benefit from an 18 inch layer of mulch applied six inches
away from the trunk and 2 to 6 inches thick. Use commercial sterilized
mulch. Freshly ground tree mulch can contain the organism responsible for
the lethal disease 'Ganoderma Butt
Rot.' Dead Palm trees containing the deadly fungus 'Ganoderma
zonatrum,' can be ground up into a fine looking but lethal mulch.
Tools used in removing dead trees should be sterilized
with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol)
or hydrogen peroxide (H2O2),
to prevent transferring the fungus to other palms.
Mulching Dont's
DO NOT pile mulch close to or against the base of any tree or shrub. This
can cause ” ROOT - ROT ” from lack of air circulation and too much
moisture retention. Leave space around the base and trunk.
DO NOT place mulch above the lower stems of shrubs burying them causing
them to rot. This will promote a disease known as ” STEM - ROT “.
Fertilizing:
There are special Palm Tree and
also Regular Tree Fertilizing Spikes available as well as bagged Tree
Fertilizers. Follow the instructions on the bag.
Good Fertilizers along with our advanced and knowledgeable Tree Trimming
and Pruning Services will ensures countless years of Pure Tree Pleasure.
We offer Tree Fertilization service and we have been known to throw
fertilization in with a tree service job.
When to Remove a
Tree
· The tree is in poor condition
and is in a stage of decline (with or without a hazard).
· A hazard has been identified
and removing the entire tree is the best option.
· The tree is diseased or the
host to a pest that may spread to adjacent trees in the urban forest.
· The tree may be interfering
(i.e. competing) with other trees considered to be more valuable or
more important in meeting
long-term objectives.
· The tree is located in the
path of infrastructure development (e.g. roadway).
· The tree is obstructing a view or
interfering with pedestrian or vehicular traffic.
To Grind the Stump
or not to Grind the Stump
Local policy and the location of the tree (for example
a street tree or a tree in a passive recreation area) will dictate
whether stump removal or grinding is appropriate. Stump removal can
seriously damage adjacent trees and root systems. Stump grinding is
much more common and the depth of grinding (e.g. 10 inches below
grade), the extent of the grinding (e.g. all structural roots greater
than 4 inches within 10 feet of the trunk), and condition of the site
following the grinding (e.g. the site will be leveled to grade, seeded
with fescue, and covered with straw) should be specified.
